When to go

The second largest airport in Germany is Munich's Munich International Airport, so it's a natural choice for people who are flying in to the area. Due to its massive size and the huge number of flights that go into and out of the airport on a daily basis, Munich International is a great place to find airfare deals. All year long it is easy to find low airline ticket prices for flights at this airport. Another great feature is the fact that many car rental agencies operate out of the airport; it's simple to get great car deals.

How to get there

Many major freeways and highways go into and out of Munich. However, if you don't absolutely need a vehicle then don't bother, as traffic can be terrible all over the city during many times of day. Try to arrive by train and use public transportation to avoid the headache of traffic. Also, public transportation in Munich is relatively cheap, so you won't have to spend a lot of extra money getting around.

Where to stay

Munich is chock full of great hotel deals. One fine example of a low priced hotel that has plenty to offer is the Hotel Imperial (Landsberger Str. 463, Munich), which offers surprisingly low rates at a relatively convenient location for touring the city. A hotel that costs a little bit more - but that also boasts many more services and amenities - is the Sheraton Munich Westpark Hotel (Garmischer Str. 2, Munich). Finally, if you demand the absolute best in terms of luxury accommodations, Munich has plenty to offer. One of the best examples of a luxury hotel in Munich is the Mandarin Oriental Munich (Neuturmstr. 1, Munich), which enjoys one of the best reputations in the city.

What to do

If you'll be visiting Munich and will have a bit of extra time, you should seriously consider heading out to the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site. It is a very somber experience, to be sure, but it is worthwhile for opening your eyes about a terrible chapter in human history. It is only a short journey from greater Munich to see this site, and it is well worth the little bit of extra time that a visit will require. There are guided tours and audio tours available, depending on your preferences.

Where to eat

Those with money to spare and a desire to experience genuine Bavarian food at its finest should head over to Ratskeller (Marienplatz 8, Munich). For a bit less money - but very tasty and fresh food - try enjoying a meal at Zum Spöckmeier (Rosenstrasse 9), which boasts modern Bavarian cuisine with a bit of a twist that is sure to make for a memorable meal. Finally, a very enjoyable - and enjoyably cheap - meal can be had at Gasthaus Fraunhofer (Fraunhoferstr. 9, Munich). The food and ambiance here is very traditional, making it a natural choice.

Englischer Garten

The Englischer Garten is a very nice place to spend a pleasant afternoon at while in Munich. It also has the second largest beer garden in the city, so it has another perk going for it. Bring along a picnic lunch to make an afternoon of it, or just stop by for an hour or two to walk around.
